FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply electricity to your house even when you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from your distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover cannot happen until your present provider has issued you your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll inform your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual move over to the new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider needs to do one final meter reading. then send you their final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in Adelaide

From the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been gradually deregulating. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity network which enabled electricity that was generated in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In order to create more competition the energy market was split into two levels

The distributors manage the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.

The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

In July 2013, Adelaide's energy market was fully deregulated. This allowed consumers to switch to whichever provider had the cheapest electricity prices.

Reduce your energy bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce how much you spend on electricity

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, warm socks, booties, jumper).
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
